Meal Up Privacy Policy
Privacy, made simple.
Meal Up helps you scan ingredients and meals, get recipe ideas, and track your nutrition. This policy explains what information we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It applies to the Meal Up mobile app and this website.
Last updated: October 8, 2026
Who we are
Meal Up is operated by [Legal company name] (“Meal Up”, “we”, “us”), [Registered business address]. We are responsible for the personal information described in this policy. You can reach us at support@mealup.app.
Information we collect
Account information. You sign in with Apple or Google. We receive your name, email address, and account identifier from that provider, and a profile picture link if Google provides one. If you use Apple’s “Hide My Email”, we receive a private relay address instead of your real email.
Profile and body information you enter. Your first name, date of birth, gender, height, current and goal weight, workouts per week, weight goal (lose, maintain, or gain), typical steps per day, preferred units, country, region, currency, language, and time zone. We use these to calculate your calorie and nutrient goals and to localize prices.
Food and nutrition content. Photos you scan, barcodes you scan, ingredients, meals and recipes you save or log, custom foods, grocery lists, nutrition goals, and your daily nutrition history.
Purchase information. If you subscribe to Premium, Apple or Google processes your payment. We never receive your card or bank details. We receive and store your plan, its status, renewal or expiry date, the store’s transaction identifier, and the price and currency.
Usage and device information. We record how the app is used (for example, signing in, scanning, logging a meal, or starting a subscription), linked to your account, so we can understand and improve Meal Up. Our servers also record technical information with each request, such as your IP address, the request made, and any errors.
We do not collect your precise location, contacts, microphone audio, or advertising identifiers.
Apple Health and Health Connect
If you choose to connect Apple Health (iOS) or Health Connect (Android), Meal Up reads your steps, active energy (calories burned), and exercise time or sessions for the current day, so your activity appears alongside what you’ve eaten.
- This data is read and displayed on your device only. It is not sent to our servers or stored by us.
- Meal Up never writes data to Apple Health or Health Connect.
- We never use health data for advertising or marketing, never sell it, and never share it with third parties, including data brokers.
- Connecting is optional. You can revoke access at any time in iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices, or in the Health Connect app on Android.
Meal Up’s use of information received from Health Connect adheres to the Health Connect Permissions policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
Photos, camera, and scans
Meal Up uses your camera or photo library only when you choose to scan ingredients, a meal, or a barcode. Before a photo is stored, we remove its embedded metadata (such as location data) and resize it.
Scan photos are stored in private cloud storage linked to your account, so they can appear in your meal history. They are only accessible to you through the app, using links that expire.
To avoid analyzing the same picture twice, we keep the results of analyzing a photo (such as the detected foods and nutrition estimates) together with a fingerprint of the image. This record does not include the photo or your account details, and we may reuse it when an identical or nearly identical photo is scanned.
How we use your information
- To provide Meal Up: recognizing ingredients and meals, estimating nutrition, suggesting meals and recipes, building grocery lists with estimated prices, and tracking your progress.
- To calculate personalized calorie and nutrient goals from your profile.
- To manage your account and Premium subscription.
- To keep Meal Up secure and working, including preventing abuse, enforcing usage limits, and fixing problems.
- To understand how Meal Up is used and improve it.
- To respond when you contact us, and to comply with the law.
If you are in the European Economic Area or the UK, we rely on the following legal bases: performing our contract with you (providing the app and your subscription), your consent (health data and camera or photo access, which you can withdraw at any time), our legitimate interests (security, fraud prevention, and improving Meal Up), and legal obligations.
AI processing
Meal Up’s recognition, nutrition estimates, meal suggestions, and price estimates are generated by third-party AI models. To produce them, we send the relevant content to our third-party AI providers:
- Scan photos and food and ingredient names, to recognize foods and estimate nutrition.
- Ingredient lists and meal details (text only), to generate meal suggestions and cooking instructions.
- Grocery item names with your country and currency, to estimate prices.
We send these providers only the content needed for the request, not your name or email address. They process it under their API terms to return results to us.
AI-generated results can be wrong. See our Terms of Service for important limits on relying on them.
Who we share information with
We share information only with service providers that help us run Meal Up, and only what each needs to do its job:
- Cloud infrastructure providers: host our servers, database, sign-in, and photo storage.
- AI providers: process the content described above to power Meal Up’s AI features.
- Analytics providers: help us understand how Meal Up is used. They receive your account identifier, email address, sign-in provider, plan, and app activity events.
- Apple and Google: sign-in and subscription payments.
- Purchase management providers: process in-app subscriptions and receive your Meal Up account identifier and purchase records.
- Public food databases: receive food search terms and barcode numbers only, with no account information.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights, safety, or property of Meal Up, our users, or others, or as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, in which case this policy will continue to apply to your information.
What we don't do
- We don’t sell your personal information.
- We don’t share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and Meal Up shows no ads.
- We don’t track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
How long we keep information
We keep your account, profile, food content, and scan photos for as long as your account is active, so your history stays available to you. Server logs are kept for a limited period for security and troubleshooting. We may keep limited records longer where the law requires it, for example purchase records for tax and accounting.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time in the app under Settings → Delete Account, or by emailing support@mealup.app. When you do, you are signed out and your account is closed immediately. Within 30 days we permanently delete your account, profile, meals, logs, grocery lists, scan photos, and analytics data linked to you, except records we must keep by law.
Deleting your account does not cancel a Premium subscription. Subscriptions are billed by Apple or Google, so cancel in your App Store or Google Play subscription settings to stop future charges.
Your rights and choices
- You can view and edit your profile and goals in the app.
- You can disconnect Apple Health or Health Connect, and turn off camera or photo access, in your device settings.
- You can delete your account in the app.
- You can ask us for a copy of your information, or to correct, delete, or restrict it, by emailing support@mealup.app. We may need to verify your identity first, and we’ll respond within the time the law requires.
We won’t treat you differently for exercising your privacy rights.
Additional regional information
EEA and UK. You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our use of your information, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
United States (including California). Depending on where you live, you may have the right to know what personal information we collect, use, and disclose, and to access, correct, or delete it. The categories we collect are listed in “Information we collect”, including sensitive information (health and body information), which we use only to provide Meal Up. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in California law. Some states, including Washington and Nevada, have specific consumer health data laws; we collect and use consumer health data only as described in this policy and only to provide the features you ask for.
Canada. You may access and correct your personal information and withdraw consent, subject to legal and contractual limits.
International transfers
Our servers and most of our service providers are in the United States, so your information is processed there. Where the law requires it, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, for these transfers.
Security
We protect your information with encrypted connections, private storage with expiring access links, access controls on our systems, and by removing photo metadata. No system is perfectly secure, so we can’t guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your information, we will notify you as the law requires.
Children
Meal Up is not intended for children. You must be at least 13 years old to use it, or older if your country requires a higher age to consent to data processing. We don’t knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, contact support@mealup.app and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Meal Up changes. We’ll change the “Last updated” date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app or by email before they take effect.
